Workshop format
Like the main COSPAR-2021 Assembly, the Cross-Disciplinary Workshops will feature a combination of pre-recorded talks and live sessions. Although pre-recorded talks will be available on-demand for the entirety of the COSPAR assembly and beyond (until Dec 31st 2021), each talk will also be assigned a unique time slot on the day of the workshop. This is to give the audience an opportunity to experience presentations together, and for live global Q&A with the presenters.
Invited Speakers
Madhulika Guhathakurta (NASA HQ)
Machine Learning & Space Science at Frontier Development Lab
Madhulika (Lika) Guhathakurta is an Astrophysicist with NASA’s Heliophysics Division at Head Quarters. She Led the Living with a Star Program for a decade and half whose goal is to understand and ultimately predict solar variability and its diverse effects on Earth, human technology and astronauts in space, also known as “Space Weather”. Led missions such as STEREO, SDO, Van Allen Probes, Solar Orbiter Collaboration, Parker Solar Probe and others. Initiated Space Weather to be a permanent agenda item at UNCOPUOS in 2013, created graduate level textbooks in heliophysics and leads new initiatives by fusing science, technology and public-private partnership.
Shirley Ho (Flatiron Institute)
Learning Symbolic Equations with Deep Learning
Shirley Ho’s research interests have ranged from using machine learning and statistics to tackle fundamental challenges in cosmology to finding new structures in our own Milky Way. Ho has broad expertise in theoretical astrophysics, observational astronomy, and data science. Ho’s recent interest has been on understanding and developing novel tools in machine learning techniques, and applying them to astrophysical challenges. Her goal is to understand the universe’s beginning, evolution, and its ultimate fate. Ho earned her Ph.D. in astrophysical sciences from Princeton University in 2008 and her bachelor’s degrees in computer science and physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004. She was a Chamberlain fellow and a Seaborg fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory before joining Carnegie Mellon University in 2011 as an assistant professor. She became the Cooper Siegel Career Chair Professor and was appointed associate professor with tenure in 2016. She moved to Lawrence Berkeley Lab as a Senior Scientist in 2016, and to the Center of Computational Astrophysics (Simons Foundation) in 2018 as the group leader in Cosmology X Data Science.
